Hatfield Having Saxon origins when it was known as Hetfelle and then became Haethfeld around 970. Hatfield house has been on the site for over 400 years and the town grew up outside the gates of the historic building.

In the 1930 dehaviland airfield and factory was opened, later in the 1960 it was taken over by Hawker Siddeley, which merged into British Aerospace in 1978. The site closed in 1993. The site now has De Havilland Campus University as part of the university of Hertfordshire.
